Dental Fillings: Are You Ready for Them?

Tooth decay can be remedied in two ways. If the decay is minor, your dentist will treat it with dental fillings but if the decay is extensive that it has reached the dental pulp, root canal therapy may be necessary. The goal of Orlando restorative dentistry is to fix the problem at the earliest stage.

Luckily, if you are one of the many who regularly visit the dentist, you’ll only need a filling to get rid of the decay. According to the American Dental Association, around one hundred and seventy-five million dental fillings are performed in America each year.

Understanding Dental Filings

What Is a Dental Filling?

Dental fillings are the most widely used treatment in addressing tooth decay. This form of restorative dentistry focuses on repairing minor tooth damage such as broken, cracked, worn, and chipped teeth.

In this procedure, your dentist will remove the decayed and damaged portion of your tooth. Afterward, a filling material is placed to restore the integrity, shape, and strength of the affected tooth.

How Are Filings Applied?

There are two methods for applying filings – direct and indirect. In direct filings, the fillings are directly placed into the damaged areas of your tooth after disinfecting and clearing the area. Examples of materials used are composite resin or amalgam.

A bonding material is applied to the affected tooth to keep the filling in place. A special light is applied to expedite the hardening process.

The second method is indirect filling. In this procedure, custom-made fillings are fabricated by using the mold of your affected tooth. Both methods require local anesthesia. Direct fillings only require one visit while indirect requires at least two appointments.
