Dentures

Eating, smiling, and chewing with missing teeth can negatively affect your self-esteem.

Today’s dentures look more realistic than ever, giving you a smile you can proudly show off.

Alafaya Family Dentistry in Oviedo, FL, has the skill and technology to create dentures to bring back the confidence in your smile.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are designed to replace a full row or complete mouth full of teeth. Our dentists in Oviedo create natural-looking dentures that are custom designed to fit the curves and contours of your mouth. Unlike crowns or fillings, dentures replace numerous teeth or all of your teeth, in one set prosthetic.

  • Traditional dentures can be either complete or partial, depending on the number of healthy teeth a patient possesses.
  • Partial dentures are molded to fit around fit remaining natural teeth, while complete dentures replace either your top set of teeth, bottom set, or both.
  • Implant-supported dentures are another option for those who are looking to replace missing teeth, where titanium posts are embedded into the jaw.

Removable Dentures that May Enhance Your Smile

complete denture

Complete Denture

For patients with total tooth loss on their upper or lower dental arch, your dentist may recommend complete dentures. They are removable devices that sit on top of your gums, secured by suction and dental adhesive. Traditional dentures may not be as stable as implant-supported dentures, but they can improve your ability to chew and speak.

partial denture

Partial Denture

Patients who have some natural teeth remaining may want a partial denture to fill in the gap left by missing teeth. Partial dentures are a removable alternative that clasps in place, built with a discreet metal framework. Partial dentures are typically recommended when a patient has at least three missing teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures can Boost Your Oral Health

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are constructed from ultra-strong titanium. They are embedded into your gums and jawbone where a tooth or teeth are missing, forming a sturdy anchor to retain your dentures. Attached to implants, the dentures are strong and natural-looking, providing an experience very similar to your own teeth.

An implant helps to prevent jawbone loss, which is common in patients with missing teeth. Patients who have experienced jawbone loss may not be ideal candidates for dental implants, although many can achieve optimal bone density through bone grafting surgery.

The main advantage of implants is they provide a stable base for their prosthetic. However, depending on the severity of your tooth decay or loss, extractions may be recommended as part of your treatment. If so, it can take weeks before your dental implants are placed.

Consultation

Patients meet with a dentist at our Oviedo, FL, office for a consultation to determine if partial dentures, traditional full dentures, or implant-supported dentures are the best option for treatment.

Design

Once your jaws are prepared and healed from implant surgery, detailed digital impressions of your dental arches are taken. Designs are drawn based on your restoration needs. A skilled technician then produces dentures specific to your mouth and natural teeth.

Construction

Technicians create partial or full dentures from the material of your choice. Porcelain, metal, and nylon are common materials used for dentures. The construction can take up to four weeks to complete. Patients receive temporary dentures while waiting for their permanent ones.

Fitting

Once your dentures are ready, your dentist will inspect them and check to make sure they fit before making any adjustments. If you are satisfied with your dentures, we will fit the prosthetic and instruct you on how to maintain your dentures.

Cost of Dentures

The costs for dentures depend on the style and type of material used in their construction. Dentures made of lower-quality materials can cost $300 to $500 per plate, according to Fixodent, with complete sets costing $600 to $1,000. Dentures made of top-quality materials are estimated to cost $2,000 to $4,000 a denture, with complete sets running $4,000 to $8,000. Your dentist can explain the costs, payment options, and all other aspects of the treatment in our dental office in Oviedo. Our dental office also works with CreditCare®.

Caring for Removable Dentures

Keep Them Clean

Rinsing your dentures after meals and brushing them at least twice a day will improve their longevity. Our dentists recommend using a soft-bristled brush to remove food and adhesive. Cleaning over a soft towel can help avoid damage if the denture slips from your hands.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Whether you have remaining natural teeth, you should brush your gums, tongue, and soft tissue areas in your mouth at least twice a day to prevent infections and disease. If you have questions about your oral health and dentures, please contact our Oviedo office.

Soaking Overnight

Remove your prosthetic when your day is complete and let it soak in warm water or a denture solution. Soaking your denture overnight keeps it from drying out and cracking. Avoid using hot water as your prosthetic can warp, altering the shape of your appliance.

The Correct Adhesive

Be sure to select denture adhesive that is regulated and safe if accidentally consumed. Products approved by the FDA or ADA® can be trusted to be safe for your gums and mouth.

Avoid Bleach

Oral cleaning products that include bleach can change the color of your dentures and weaken them. Avoid chlorine if you have metal in your dentures, as it can tarnish and erode the metal.
