Smiling Man

Dental Crowns

Broken or severely decayed teeth can be uncomfortable and lead to several health issues.

At Alafaya Family Dentistry, custom dental crowns allow us to preserve the foundation of your smile while addressing dental discomfort.

When you visit our Oviedo, FL office, our dentists may be able to restore your smile with a new dental crown in just one appointment.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are a popular option for patients experiencing tooth disease or decay. A crown or cap is a cover your dentist puts over a weakened or diseased tooth to help restore and support the tooth. Caps or dental crowns can cover an existing flaw or take the place of a missing tooth when paired with a dental implant.

Some dental health issues a crown can correct include:

  • Fixing a misaligned bite
  • Restoring your smile's function
  • Alleviating dental discomfort
  • Providing your teeth with additional support
  • Protecting or strengthening a weakened tooth

The crowns we offer are made from high-quality dental porcelain. Crowns made from this material are designed to blend in flawlessly with your existing teeth.

Lifelike Porcelain Dental Crowns

At Alafaya Family Dentistry in Oviedo, we offer all-porcelain dental crowns. Crowns made of porcelain mimic the color and translucency of natural teeth. They are perfect for placement in the smile zone — no one will be able to differentiate your crown from your natural teeth.

Replace a Tooth  With an Implant-Supported Crown

/

If you are missing a tooth, your dentist can replace it with an implant-supported crown. A custom crown will be attached to the implant following dental implant surgery. A dental implant is the best option for replacing a single natural tooth, as it boosts jawbone health and can last a lifetime, unlike a dental bridge.

What to Expect From the Traditional Dental Crown Procedure

A traditional dental crown procedure typically happens over the course of two appointments. If you suffer from severe tooth decay, your dentist may need to perform a root canal before the dental crown procedure. Teeth that don't require a root canal are immediately filed down in preparation for a dental impression.

It is essential to remove infected or damaged portions of your tooth before placing the crown to ensure your smile will be completely free of decay.
It is essential to remove infected or damaged portions of your tooth before placing the crown to ensure your smile will be completely free of decay.
First, one of our dentists will examine your smile and take an X-ray of your teeth and the surrounding bone structures.
Next, they will take a complete digital impression of the tooth being treated.
A member of our team will send the dental impression to an outside state-of-the-art laboratory that creates the restoration.
Finally, one of our dentists will fit you with a temporary crown that will protect your tooth and allow you to speak and eat normally until your next appointment.

How Long Will I Wait
for a Permanent Crown?

/

Because we carefully customize each crown, it can take two weeks or longer before it is ready. Once we receive your permanent restoration, one of our dentists will remove your temporary crown and fit you with your permanent crown. The color, size, shape, and fit of your new crown will be inspected before your dentist cements it in place.

How Are Same-Day Dental Crowns Different  From Traditional Crowns?

For the right candidates, we also offer same-day crowns. Same-day crowns are tooth-shaped caps identical in quality and function to traditional crowns. They are designed to cover a compromised tooth; however, unlike traditional crowns, they only take a few hours to complete and don't require you to wear a temporary crown.

With same-day crowns, we begin treatment by obtaining a complete digital image of your tooth. The image is then transferred to a CAD/CAM machine that creates your custom crown.

At Alafaya Family Dentistry in Oviedo, FL, we take pride in providing beautiful custom dental crowns from the comfort of our office. Using revolutionary CEREC® technology, one of our dentists can mill and install your same-day crown in only a couple of hours.

After speaking with you about your cosmetic concerns, your dentist will take the time to match the color and shape of your crown to your natural teeth, which will promote a better aesthetic and restore the overall look of your smile. We can customize dental crowns for all patients in the Oviedo or Orlando, FL area.

Are Dental Crowns Covered by Insurance?

Dental insurance will typically cover the cost of a porcelain crown used for restorative purposes, like strengthening a damaged tooth. Crowns that are used for cosmetic reasons, like concealing dental discoloration, will not be covered. We will be glad to contact your dental insurance company on your behalf to secure the best coverage possible for your treatment.
